Wyoming’s Yellowstone was the very first National Park, and today it’s considered awe-inspiring. When John Colter stumbled across the area in the early 1800s, though, he found it so bizarre that he dubbed it “Colter’s Hell.” The Wyoming Territory was formed in 1869, and residents’ thoughts immediately turned toward statehood. But they had to wait until July 10, 1890, for Wyoming to become the Union’s 44th state.
Today, Wyoming is one of the 10 largest states in terms of land area, but has the smallest population, with only about 544,300 residents. Its capital and largest city is Cheyenne, and just over 55,300 people call it home.
