The Washington area was part of the Oregon Territory until 1853, when residents north of the Columbia River decided to split off and form their own territory. The first census of the new territory, later that same year, found 3,965 white inhabitants. The area grew quickly, and by 1860, the population had grown to 11,594. Reflecting the attitude of the time, the census counts did not include Indians.
Washington became the 42nd state on Nov. 11, 1889, and its population has continued to grow. Today it has about 6,664,200 residents. Its largest city, Seattle, was founded in 1852, before Washington was even its own territory, and now has nearly 582,500 inhabitants. The state capital is Olympia, where some 44,600 people live.
