Utah had only about 40,000 residents in the 1860s, before the discovery of precious metals caused its population to swell. By the time it entered the Union as its 45th state, on Jan. 4, 1896, its population had reached nearly a quarter of a million people. Today, Utah’s population is closer to 3 million.
Although Utah is one of the larger states, the federal government owns about 65 percent of the land, and the Great Salt Lake covers 1,060,000 acres. Its residents are concentrated largely in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah and Weber counties, the area with the most resources. Salt Lake City is the state capital and its largest city. Almost 179,000 people call it home.
