Tennessee was the 16th state admitted to the Union on June 1, 1786. More recently, Tennessee has produced enough legendary musicians to earn recognition as both the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll” (Memphis) and the “Birthplace of Country Music” (Bristol). The first woman inducted into the Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame, Aretha Franklin, was born in Memphis.
Memphis is also Tennessee’s largest city, with a population of just about 670,900. Nashville and Davidson County, home to the capital city of Nashville, has only slightly fewer residents: just over 552,120. The entire state boasts a population of about 6,296,300.
