South Carolina became the nation’s eighth state on May 23, 1788. Later, it was the first state to secede from the Union, on Dec. 20, 1860. Just a few weeks later it was also the site of the first shot fired in the Civil War when, on Jan. 9, 1861, Citadel cadets on Morris Island fired on the Star of the West, which was headed for Fort Sumter.

Its 31,113 square mile area makes South Carolina one of the smaller states in the Union, although its population (4,561,242 in 2009) ranks in the middle of all states. Its capital and largest city is Columbia, with almost 120,000 residents.
