Tiny Rhode Island was the first colony to proclaim independence from Great Britain on May 4, 1776. Fourteen years later, it was the last of the original 13 colonies to ratify the Constitution, becoming a state on May 29, 1790.

Rhode Island is the U.S.’s smallest state, at just 1,045 square miles of land. Its 1,053,209 residents put it in the bottom 10 states in terms of population, but near the top in terms of density. The state averages 1,003 persons per square mile. Providence is its capital and, with a population just over 175,200, its largest city.

  • State Law Library: The library, initially organized in 1827 with only a handful of books, today has more than 100,000 volumes located in the Supreme and Superior Court building in Providence. It is publicly funded and therefore available to both lawyers and the public for legal research.
