Pennsylvania, named for Admiral William Penn’s father, became the second state in the Union on December 12, 1787. Its strength held together the original 13 colonies, earning it the nickname the Keystone State.

It is one of the most populated states in the Union, with over 12, 604,700 residents, nearly 1.5 million of them residing in Philadelphia, its largest city. Philadelphia is also where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written and where Betsy Ross made her flag. The population of the state capital, Harrisburg, is almost 47,200.
