The region that would become Oklahoma was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and later the western half of Indian Territory. When Indian Territory was opened to white settlers in 1889, the Oklahoma Territory was born. It became the 46th state on Nov. 16, 1907.
Oklahoma was home to the first flowing commercial oil well in the world, the Nellie Johnstone well in Bartlesville. Its capital and largest city, Oklahoma City, is home to about 537,700 residents and is also the only capital in the world sitting on an oil well. The state’s population is around 3,687,000.
