Ohio was the Union’s 17th state, or maybe not. Congress authorized the southeastern portion of the Northwest Territory to form a state government, but never officially declared Ohio a state, as it did with every other state. Instead, Ohio became a state by default the day the General Assembly of Ohio first convened, March 1, 1803. The legitimacy of Ohio’s statehood was questioned in the early 1950s, and in 1953, Congress retroactively declared that March day as the date Ohio joined the Union.
Today, Ohio is one of the top 10 most populous states, with about 11,542,600 residents. Its capital and largest city is Columbus, which boasts over 733,200 inhabitants.
