North Dakota Legal Marketing

The original North Dakota Territory covered what is now both Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana. The state was admitted to the Union on the same day as South Dakota, Nov. 2, 1889. President Benjamin Harrison refused to reveal the order in which he signed the statehood proclamations, so they were ranked according to alphabetical order, making North Dakota number 39.

Although its 68,976 square miles area ranks in the top 20 largest states, its population of about 646,844 is one of the smallest in the nation. Even its largest city, Fargo, has barely more than 90,000 residents. Less than 58,400 people live in the capital city of Bismarck.
