New Hampshire, one of the original 13 colonies, became the ninth state on June 21, 1788. The first public library in the newly formed Union opened in 1833 in Peterborough, which today has just under 6,000 residents.

The Granite State has an area of just 9,304 square miles, and 277 square miles are inland water. This small state has a population of about 1,325,000, a number similar to that of the US’s largest cities. It’s capital, Concord, boasts just over 42,000 residents, and about 110,000 people live in its largest city, Manchester.
