Minnesota became the nation’s 32nd state on May 11, 1858. It may be in the Midwest, but the state’s 90,000 miles of shoreline is more than the combined totals of California, Florida and Hawaii. It also has the highest rate of recreational boat ownership in the country, at one boat for every six people. That’s a lot of boats, considering the state population is around 5,266,200.
Madison, Minnesota is the “Lutefisk capital of the United States,” which might explain why the 2000 census found only 1,768 people living there. On the other hand, the city of Pig’s Eye has about 273,535 residents. Of course, that’s probably because it’s now called St Paul and is the state capital.
