Maryland joined the Union on April 28, 1788, as its seventh state. Nicknamed the Old Line State because the “Maryland line” repelled British troops in the 1776 Battle of Long Island, it later was the scene of the bloodiest single-day battle of America’s history, The Battle of Antietam in 1862, which caused some 23,000 casualties.
Today, the state is one of the most densely populated, with nearly 5,700,000 residents living in an area of only 9,844 square miles. The state capital, Annapolis, has only about 36,400 residents, while its largest city, Baltimore, boasts some 631,366 inhabitants.
