Maine became the union’s 23rd state on March 15, 1820, and is both the easternmost state in the United States and the northernmost state in New England. Nicknamed the Pine Tree State, Maine is the largest of the New England states, but is still a relatively small state, with a land area of only 33,215 square miles and an estimated 2009 population of 1,318,301.
