Kansas Legal Marketing

Kansas, originally part of the Louisiana Purchase, became the nation’s 34th state on Jan. 29, 1861. The road to statehood was not easy, with residents so divided over whether to join as a free or slave state, that events during the period from 1855 to 1861 earned it the nickname “Bleeding Kansas.”

The 34th state was the childhood home of the 34th president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took office in 1952. The “Dust Bowl” devastated the state in the 1930s, but today 90 percent of the land is agricultural. There’s still room for people, though, and its population in 2009 was estimated at 2,818,747. Its largest city, Wichita, has around 357,700 residents and just over 122,100 people call Topeka, its capital, home.
