The area that would become Iowa was originally part of the Louisiana Purchase, in which the U.S. government took part of the Mississippi Valley from the Indians in exchange for a little cash, salt and tobacco. Iowa became an independent territory in 1838 when it split from the Wisconsin Territory and joined the Union as the 29th state on December 28, 1846.
The capital of the new state was Iowa City until 1857, when it was moved to Des Moines. Today, Des Moines is also the state’s largest city, with almost 194,000 residents. Iowa City is a bit smaller, with about 62,600 people living there. The state’s population was estimated at 3,007,856 in 2009.
