Idaho’s oldest town, Franklin, was founded in April 1860. Its oldest mining town sprang up later that year, after gold was found in Orofino Creek. These tiny towns each had less than 700 residents as of the 2000 census. The Idaho Territory was created in 1863 and joined the Union on July 3, 1890 as the 43rd state.

There hasn’t been a gemstone rush, though, and the state’s population is only about 1,545,800.
