The first state in the new Union was tiny Delaware, on December 7, 1787. The First State is proud of that distinction, adopting the state slogan “It’s Good Being First.” Delaware is also unique for not having a state sales tax; it is one of only five states without one.
Delaware’s 1,982 square miles – it’s only 9 miles wide at its narrowest point – make it the second smallest state. It has only about 885,100 residents and almost 73,000 of them live in its largest city of Wilmington. Dover, the state capital, has about 34,735 inhabitants.
