Connecticut is the southernmost state in New England and one of the smallest states in the Union. Size isn’t everything though, as the state boasts the oldest continuously published newspaper in the country, the Hartford Courant, first published on October 29, 1764. The paper is older, even than Connecticut, which became the Union’s fifth state on January 9, 1788.
From 1703 to 1875, the General Assembly of Connecticut alternated its meetings between Hartford and New Haven, before finally settling on Hartford as the state’s capital, which it remains today. Hartford’s population of about 124,500 is only slightly fewer than that of the state’s largest city of Bridgeport, which has nearly 138,000 residents.
