Spanish explorers discovered Baja California in the mid 1530s, but didn’t establish permanent settlements in “Alta California” until 1769. That year, they founded a presidio (military fort) and mission at San Diego. Today the city has grown to about 1,257,000 residents.
After Mexico won it independence from Spain, it had trouble governing the area, and the last Mexican governor left in 1845. California joined the Union on September 9, 1850, as the 31st state. Today California is the most populous state in the country, with an estimated 36,871,648 residents in 2009. Nearly four million people live in Los Angeles, the largest city. The capital of Sacraments boasts around 453,800 inhabitants.
