Arkansas was originally part of the Louisiana Territory, later becoming part of the Missouri Territory before finally becoming an independent territory in 1819. It was admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836, as the 25th state. The capital was originally at Arkansas Post, but moved to Little Rock in 1821.
Today, Arkansas has the distinction of hosting the only diamond mine in the US. Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro is also the only diamond mine anywhere that is open to the public. The state has a relatively low population of about 2,889,000. Its capital is also its largest city, with some 184,400 residents.
