Arizona became part of the US after the war with Mexico, and it became the 48th state on February 14, 1912. Its name is believed to come from an Aztec word, “arizum,” meaning “silver bearing,” which is appropriate since silver is one of the mineral deposits that attracted settlers to come and try to secure their fortunes in the state.
Arizona is one of the Union’s largest states and has a varied topography that includes desert and forest, as well as mountains and lakes, not to mention the Grand Canyon. Its almost 6,596,000 residents agree that it has something for everyone. About 1,513,000 of those people live in its largest city and capital, Phoenix.
