Alaska Legal Marketing

The identity of the first Alaskans is a matter of debate, but it’s likely they crossed a land bridge from Siberia between 15,000 and 25,000 years ago. More recently, in 1849, people migrated north to Alaska in search of gold. It became a US territory in 1867 and residents quickly decided they wanted a say in their government. Efforts to join the Union began in 1916, but it took over 40 years and several tries before Alaska became the 49th state on January 3, 1959.

The state’s 571,951 square miles of land make it the largest state, but its population of just under 700,000 is one of the nation’s smallest. About 40% of Alaskans live in Anchorage, its largest city. Some 30,700 people live in the capital, Juneau.
